YOUR CHILD'S FIRST VISIT
Whether this is your child's first visit to a dentist or this is a visit to a new dentist, it is important that your child feel comfortable and begin developing a trusting rapport with the Doctor and staff.
The first visit is designed to gain your child's confidence and trust. Each child is unique; we understand their curiosity and apprehension and give each patient individualized attention. Everything is carefully explained and each child participates in activities, designed to help build their self- confidence. One of our highly trained staff will guide your child throughout this introduction.
During this appointment we spend time with you and your child on toothbrushing and reviewing food choices that help fight tooth decay. We also review the child's medical and dental history, take any necessary x-rays, and Dr. Kizer discusses your child's present dental needs. He then consults with you and your child about recommended treatment.
Your child should visit the dentist by his/her 2nd birthday. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. Your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. The less to-do concerning the visit, the better.
It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "shot", "pull", "drill" or "hurt". The office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child.
We are all highly experienced in helping children overcome anxiety. Separation anxiety is not uncommon in children, so please try not to be concerned if your child exhibits some negative behavior. This is normal and will soon diminish. Studies and experience have shown that most children over the age of 4 react more positively when permitted to experience the dental visit on their own and in an environment designed for children.
We strive to make each and every visit to our office a fun one!
Dental Treatment
There will usually be one visit before restorative treatment is performed. The importance of introducing your child to dental health, and the building of trust and confidence, is as important as the actual treatment itself. Please be aware that your own attitude and positive example are very important to influencing your child's feelings about their dental visits, so please don't hesitate to ask questions. Your smiling face will give your child added confidence.
Our goal of treatment is to correct dental conditions and maintain the health of your child's teeth. This will include restoration of baby and permanent teeth and it may also include fluoride treatments or supplements. When the Doctor believes it is best for your child, he may recommend a relaxant (such as nitrous oxide) to relieve anxiety and to protect the child from discomfort during a dental visit. All treatment is provided using the latest techniques in an environment that meets or exceeds all current state and federal regulations regarding infection control in the dental office.
